Secrets to Styling a Small Kitchen

How to make a small kitchen look bigger

From choosing the right colour of kitchen doors to utilising storage in your kitchen units and painting your walls, we have narrowed down some of the biggest contributors to maximise your small kitchen.

Starting with your walls.. are your walls painted, tiled or wallpapered?

If you are opting to paint your kitchen walls, choose a neutral colour such as a light grey, white or off white or a very toned down colour such as duck egg blue. This will brighten up your space making your renovated kitchen look a lot bigger.

If you prefer tiles, opt for a larger tile, again in a neutral colour. Depending on the size,  a larger tile will provide less grout lines, meaning your kitchen will look a lot cleaner and not-so busy as it would with smaller tiles.

Fan of a wallpapered kitchen? Adopt a simple pattern or light texture, stay away from bold print especially to make your kitchen look spacious.

How to organise small kitchen counter space

Next, where do you keep your kitchen utensils? How about your spices? Do you have your mugs on display? Maximise the size of your kitchen by keeping your kitchen worktops and wall space clear from accessories such as utensils and drink-ware.

Keep only small kitchen appliances such as your kettle and toaster on display. And if you can, integrate your microwave into your kitchen cabinets along with all of your major appliances including your fridge freezer, to create a sleek, minimal and large looking kitchen.

Only the essentials! It’s ok to have your kettle, toaster and microwave out on display, you use these almost everyday.

How to brighten a small kitchen

Lastly, it is essential to choose the right colour of kitchen cupboard doors to maintain a larger looking kitchen. Never choose dark kitchen cupboards as these will instantly darken the room making the space look a lot smaller, even smaller than it actually is! Opt for a white or off white colour and gloss finish as the natural gloss reflection will deepen the room making it look spacious.
